Samar Zaoui is an Italian-Tunisian photographer. She works between Tunisia and Syria, focusing on photography and research. She is interested in global phenomena, including migration in the Mediterranean, the agency of diasporas along migratory routes, and how individuals confront and navigate violence.Since 2018, she has been working in southern Tunisia, where she documents migration routes and the socio-economic networks of border regions. His commitment intensified following an incident in 2022 in Zarzis, involving a childhood friend who had set off for Sicily with her 8-month-old baby. According to the authorities, the boat was involved in an accident and all 18 people on board died. The circumstances of that incident remain unclear to this day. She collaborated with the Cesura photo collective. In 2022, she began the project Défaillance: psychological consequences of war on children, starting from Gaziantep, Turkey, tracing the migratory paths caused by the Syrian conflict. Since December 2024, she has been working in Syria to document the country’s transition following the fall of the Assad regime. Within this context, she is developing Rzuga. She works as a photographer, translator and expert/fixer with Italian national newspapers and television broadcasters, such as L'Espresso, Rai and Corriere della Sera. She holds a BA in Cultural Studies, with a focus on Philosophy and History. She is currently completing a Master’s degree in Anthropology and Contemporary Global History, working on the Caesar Dossier focus on photographic archive and the Damascus Counter-Terrorism Court (CTC) (2011–2024).
